2011-2012 EVENTS: Chemistry and Food
Homecoming
Headed by: Emily Levine, Elizabeth Goldberger, Davida Kollmar, Avital Meiri
September 18, 2011
The chemistry club participated in the club fair at YU's Homecoming festivities. We made silly putty of various colors and explained polymerization. The activity was enjoyed by children of alumni and undergraduate students alike.

Mole Hunt
Headed by: Ilana Ickow, Avital Meiri, Sarah Noble
October 24, 2011
In honor of Mole Day (October 23rd), we planted small colored stuffed moles around the chemistry floor (fifth floor) for students to find. Whoever found the few special ones that had a special marking received a small prize.
Super Size Me
Headed by: Emily Levine, Aviva Gittleman
November 3, 2011
We watched Morgan Spurlock's 2004 documentary about the effects of fast food and the changes that such a diet can make to a person's life. The movie followed Spurlock as he ate only McDonald's food for a month in order to spread awareness about the obesity epidemic in America. In honor of the movie we served burgers and fries.
Brooklyn Grange
Headed by: Emily Levine, Davida Kollmar, Sarah Noble
November 11, 2011
In honor of our theme of chemistry and food, the chemistry club, along with the Social Justice Society, braved the cold, windy weather and visited an Urban Farm in Queens. A commercial organic farm, Brooklyn Grange grows food on New York City rooftops and sells it to local customers. They gave us a tour of the farm and talked about the special planning that goes into growing vegetables in a unique city farm. We even got to eat some samples!
"Interfacing Electrical and Biological Systems at the Nanoscale" Lecture by Dr. Gorodetsky
Headed by: SURGE
November 30, 2011
Dr. Alon Gorodetsky, a former professor at Stern who is now researching at the University of California-Irvine, came with his collegue Dr. Allon Hochbaum to discuss DNA nanotechnology and how bio-inspired materials can be used for the development of clean energy. In addition, the researchers will be gave general advice for those interested in research, chemical engineering, materials science, and science graduate schools. The event was co-sponsored by SURGE.
Chemistry Club Shabbaton
Headed by: Emily Levine, Batsheva Kuhr, Racheli Ratner, Elizabeth Goldberger, Davida Kollmar
December 2-3, 2011
This year's Chemistry Club Shabbaton was cosponsored by the Physics Club, Neuroscience Club, and the Al Pi Darko Jewish Educator's Society. Friday Night was game night, with two science games created in conjuction with the other science clubs. For our Motzaei Shabbat activity, we watched "Flubber," ate pizza, and made our own ice cream from scratch, putting the concept of freezing point depression into action! A great time was had by all.
Caf signs
Headed by: Ilana Ickow
As part of our theme of chemistry and food, the chemistry club created signs to put in Stern's cafeterias describing the chemical makeup and benefits of some of our favorite foods.
Takeru Kobayashi
Headed by: Emily Levine, Sarah Noble
February 23, 2012
The chemistry club hosted Kobayashi, a world-famous competitive eater. Kobayashi holds the world record in hot dog eating, as well as many other food records. He talked about his relationship with food, how he trains for competitions, and what it is like to be a competitive eater. Most of the time was spent answering questions posed by the very excited audience, on topics such as his controversy with Nathan's Hot Dogs and his competition with a bear. In honor of the event, mini hot dogs were served, along with a two foot Hamantasch. After the event, students had a chance to take pictures with the celebrity.
Dr. Michael Machczynski
Headed by: Emily Levine
March 12, 2012
Dr. Machczynski, a professor at YC, gave us a presentation about his research in protein engineering. He discussed how specific proteins can be used to simulate blood and to perform many other functions.
Earth Day
Headed by: Avital Meiri, Racheli Ratner
April 23, 2012
In honor of Earth Day, April 22, we ran a table to inform the student body about chemistry and environmentalism. We also gave out stressballs.
Sugarworld
Headed by: Elizabeth Goldberger
May 2, 2012
Sugarworld was this year's annual chemistry club carnival. Students who visited the booths made sweets such as ice cream and candy apples using their knowledge of chemistry. Students also got to watch demonstrations of chromatography and sugar water density rainbows.
The Magic of Food Chemistry
Headed by: Ilana Ickow, Davida Kollmar, Malka Nusbaum
May 3, 2012
The chemistry club hosted its annual magic show. The tricks were all related to food, such as vanishing water and diving ketchup. The grand finale was elephant toothpaste, because of course after a meal you need to brush your teeth!
Community Interaction Grant
Headed by: Sarah Noble
May 3 and May 10, 2012
The chemistry club joined a local school to teach the students about chemistry. We performed various experiments with the students such as milk color wheels.
